Just get out and do it.

Welcome to my blog, Garden for Your Life! This site will be mostly about my garden, but you can build one just like it in your back yard too. It can be bigger or smaller, just get out and do it. You can do it for fun. Your can do it for your health. You can do it for fresh food in these troubled times. The point is to get out and do it for whatever reason that you need.

Over time I will cover topics like canning and preserving your harvest, soil and beds, bugs, what to plant and when, and much more.

I've been working on this garden on mine and improving on it for over five years now. I will continue doing that for many more. You can too, just get out and do it.

We got Quail!

I finally got my quail pens done.  So today we went to Katy Mills area west of Houston and picked up some quail.

These are Pharaoh Quail, genus Coturnix coturnix.   This is a male that Lori is holding with the OMG look.  Ok, she would never say OMG but you get the point.

I have been working on their pen for a while.  I built a breeder pen and a growing pen.  Both pens are 6' by 6'.  The top is divided into four pens that will hold three females and one male.  The bottom is divided into two pens to hold the quail that I'm growing to eat.

The breeders will soon be laying eggs for me to eat or hatch in a incubator.  When filled I will have a total of 12 females and 4 males from four different sources for biodiversity.  The extras will soon be in my freezer.  They are four week old right now and are mature at eight weeks.  Now I have meat, potatoes, and veggies growing.  Time for dinner!

  2. Good job! I recently bought 5 quail from a man near me (south TX), but ended up with 4 males and a female :-( I will get a few more and put up the extra males. Your set up is similar to what i wanted to do with mine, but with only me interested in quail ( my husband is begrudgingly humoring me in my gardening/chickens & quail/sustainable living endeavor) I made a breeder pen out of what I had.. I intend to clip together a grow-out pen at some point, but haven't gotten there yet..LOL! What do you do with the poop from the above cages? Do you just let it fall through to the bottom ones (and hopefully out of the floor of the bottom ones ) as well?

    1. Hi, I haven't looked here in a while. I had drop pans that i made under each pen on rails so they slid in and out real easy. The poop went straight into the garden. my plants loved it

Ive since stopped raising quail. i cant grow or scavage for food in a SHTF event. ive switched to rabbits for that reason.
